Bay Bridge At Night

San Francisco Bay, California

Fine Art Print | Limited Edition of 75

While the Golden Gate Bridge steals the spotlight when it comes to the San Francisco Bay, there's another bridge that is longer, older, and far more beautiful at night. The Bay Bridge is actually a series of two bridges that connect at Yerba Buena Island. The Oakland or east span of the bridge is 10,176 feet long while the San Francisco or western span is 10,304 ft long, totaling 4.46 miles in length. That is more than twice the length of the more popular Golden Gate.

In the early 1900's critics of the Bay Bridge thought that the bridge would be impossible to build due to the bay's turbulent waters and gusty winds. Despite the challenges, the Bay Bridge was completed in 1936, just six months before the Golden Gate. On the bridge's opening day the SF Chronicle reported this headline "The greatest traffic jam in the history of S.F., A dozen old-fashioned New Year's eves thrown into one" In the first year the bridge saw nine million vehicles. Today the bridge receives 260,000 vehicles every day. The original bridge design consisted of two way vehicular traffic on the upper deck with train tracks on the lower deck. In 1962 the bridge was modified so westbound traffic traveled on the upper deck and east bound traffic traveled on the lower deck.

In 2013, Leo Villareal installed the worlds largest LED light art installation on the bridge called "The Bay Lights". The exhibit opened on March 5th lighting up the Bay Bridge every night until March 15th 2015. After which the lights turned off and the bridge went dark. The installation was so popular that San Francisco conducted an impact assessment that concluded the light installation brought in an additional 100 million dollars to the San Francisco economy. On January 30th 2016 the bridge lights turned back on as a permanent installation.

Metal prints have quickly become one of the most popular substrates for landscape photography. These prints are created through a process called dye sublimation in which dyes are infused directly into a specially coasted metal sheet. This technique produces a print that has higher brightness than paper resulting in enhanced saturation and smooth tones. Metal prints are surprisingly light and very easy to care for. They do not need to be protected by glass and come ready to hang on a float mount that gives the print a modern look as it floats off the wall without a border. Metal prints can easily be cleaned with regular household glass cleaner. They are UV resistant to ensure that your prints longevity.
