American Bison

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Sepia Fine Art Print | Limited Edition of 100

The American Bison is unlike any other wildlife in the United States. Perhaps that is why it was designated as the nation's national mammal in 2016. Bison are often referred to as Buffalo or American Buffalo, but the most correct term is bison. These animals once roamed North America in numbers estimated to be as high as 30 to 60 million. When European settlers arrived, millions of bison were slaughtered for food, hides, sport, and to starve off the Native American tribes. By 1890 only about a 1,000 bison remained. Thanks to conservation efforts, there are now 500,000 bison in the US but most are raised as livestock on ranches. There are currently about 30,000 Bison that are managed for conservation on public and private lands.

Yellowstone is well known for its Bison heads because it has the largest population out of anywhere else in the US. As of 2020, it is estimated that there are 4,700 bison living in Yellowstone National Park. The park is the only place in the US where bison have lived continuously since prehistoric time.

Bison are the largest land animals in North America with males weighing up to 2,000 pounds. The hump on their backs is a large neck muscle that allows the animal to swing its head back and forth to clear paths through deep snow. In the winter months Bison grow thick coats of fur to help them stay warm during the harsh winters. As spring rolls around the coat sheds, by late summer the bison herds are at their largest when the rut or mating season begins. At this time heads can grow to as large as 1,000 bison. This is certainly a sight to see while conjuring up the mental image of what it was like on the open plains before settlers arrived.

This is a close up photograph of a full grown female bison head as she walked straight towards me. Bison will walk where they please regardless of what is in their way. I shot a few images of this beautiful animal with a very long telephoto lens before retreating to the safety of a vehicle. It is important to always give wildlife the proper space so you do not interfere with its habits and to protect yourself from harm.
