MODERN BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY INSPIRED BY ANSEL ADAMS

Ansel Adams is perhaps the most well-known photographer in the world. His iconic black and white photographs helped shape how photography is perceived in the art community and has inspired landscape photographers ever since his time. Ansel Adams was a pioneer of image processing in the darkroom and believed that a photograph should be a reflection of the artist’s vision rather than an exact representation of world.

Ansel Adam’s most important and relevant work revolves around America’s untouched landscapes and national parks, with some of his most famous photographs being made in Yosemite National Park and the Southwest. Spending most of my career in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range and Southwest, I invite you to browse my gallery of limited edition black and white photographs. These timeless prints have been carefully crafted with the intention of creating a lasting impact on the viewer.

Ansel Adams has been a huge inspiration to the creation of my work and much like Adams, my biggest goal is to connect people with the natural world. While no artwork can replace being outside, it is important to bring nature indoors whenever possible. Moreover, a properly composed photograph can invoke feelings and emotions from elements in nature that one might overlook when exploring a broader landscape.

Large Black & White Prints

Unlike Ansel Adam’s photographs which are limited to relatively small sizes, many of my prints can be printed at a large scale, allowing them to be the centerpiece of a room. Adding large artwork to a room creates a focal point, adds ambiance and is a provocateur of conversations. Adding an elegant frame can help emphasize the importance of the artwork. My "Prestige Series" black and white acrylic photographs are shipped fully framed and ready to hang on your wall. These prints are framed in your choice of Italian Roma and Omega frames to create a finished art piece that is of the highest quality.

Timeless Photographs Inspired by Ansel Adams

One of the most common attributes of an Ansel Adams prints is his use of the entire tonal range from deep blacks to bright whites. In other words, deep contrast can be found in much Adam’s work. He went as far to create a system that would eventually become known as the zone system to classify the tonal ranges within an image.

Rich tonality can create a dramatic photograph and gives the feeling of timelessness. Many of Ansel Adams photographs are just as relevant today as they were when he took them. Just as a properly processed black and white photo taken today can defy the judgement of time.

Intentional Black And White Nature Photography

Adam’s acute attention to specifics allowed him to create powerful imagery from the simplest of natural elements. It is the photographer’s job to invoke emotion within the viewer. One of the biggest strengths of photography is the ability to give incredible meaning to objects that might be deemed ordinary or mundane without the proper context. Black & White photography’s greatest advantage is the absence of color. Color can be distracting and often gives contextual clues that an image might be better off without. Without color, a photographer must rely on tonality, texture and composition to make a compelling photograph.

Ansel understood this very well. Much like Adams, when I make a photograph, I find myself obsessing over the details of every aspect. Time and comfort become irrelevant when I go to work. I slow myself down, take in the scene, study my subject and consider my options. It is very important to put one’s entire being into the art of photography when creating an image. Much like a pianist has to put their whole self into a musical composition. A photograph must be genuine and intentional, otherwise it will not be able to move the viewer with emotion.

Every photograph that I make has my deepest intentions within it. When you purchase one of my black and white photographs, you’re purchasing a piece of my vision that aims to form a deeper connection with you and the beautiful planet that we are part of.

Thanks for taking the time to browse this collection of black and white photographs. Contact me if you have any questions about my artwork, printing process or framing options.
