Death Valley Photography Workshop Review

A Record-Breaking November Storm!  |  Death Valley National Park

November 2025 delivered a Death Valley experience unlike any other. During our Death Valley photography workshop, the desert rewrote its own history, receiving a record-breaking November rainfall of 1.76 inches, surpassing a mark that had stood since 1923. What could have easily become a logistical challenge instead transformed into a rare photographic gift. For one extraordinary week, the driest place in North America revealed a softer, more ephemeral side. A side that few photographers will ever witness in their lifetime.

A Desert Transformed: Cotton Ball Marsh Becomes a Mirror of Light

The recent rains reshaped the landscape in dramatic ways. Cotton Ball Marsh filled into a shallow lake, turning the basin into a reflective dreamscape where clouds danced across the water and pastel horizons doubled in every direction. The group captured scenes that felt more like the Bolivian altiplano than Death Valley, with mirror-like reflections, saturated skies, and surreal compositions created by nature’s brief and generous handiwork.

Throughout the workshop, we were treated to dramatic skies every single day. Moody storm remnants, sweeping cloud formations, and crisp post-rain atmospherics elevated each sunrise and sunset shoot. The quality of light was exquisite, soft, sculpted, and full of character. The week was perfect for crafting expressive fine-art desert imagery.

Navigating Flooded Roads & Finding the Iconic Angles

Record rainfall also meant flooded roads, damaged access points, and several closures across the park. But after many years of exploring Death Valley, I know its rhythms and its hidden gems. Despite the conditions, we still reached most of the classic locations that define a Death Valley photography workshop.

In many ways, the challenge made the experience even more rewarding. We had to adapt, improvise, and watch the weather carefully. The group embraced the adventure with enthusiasm, and every session brought forth new creative possibilities born from the storm.

A Cohesive Group & A Memorable Creative Journey

One of the highlights of this workshop was the group itself. Everyone clicked immediately, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie, support, and shared excitement. Whether hiking out into the dunes, reviewing images together, or celebrating a particularly dramatic sky, the positive energy was constant. It made the trip not only productive from a photographic standpoint, but genuinely enjoyable on a personal level.

Our editing session added another layer of growth, as participants learned how to bring out the full emotional range of their desert images, from subtle tonal separations in the dunes to high-drama cloudscapes over the flooded marsh.

"This trip to Death Valley was spectacular. Mike knew so many great spots to shoot that were off the beaten path. The scenery everywhere was stunning. Mike gave great instruction on all the technical aspects to use to get the best photographs. And we had so much fun! Will definitely travel with Mike again!" - Michelle

"A really exceptional trip with Mike and a great group. The challenging weather made for outstanding skies and interesting light, providing the best photos I've gotten in several Death Valley visits over the years. Mike adapted seamlessly to the numerous road closures and kept us going at full speed throughout the workshop. Mike is the hardest working photographer I know, and his workshops keep you working with him, whether climbing a mountain or trekking into the dunes. As usual, I had a wonderful time!" - Chip

"I’ve done multiple workshops with Mike. I found them to all have the same level professionalism, learning and fun. This trip was no different and I have many images I’m proud of. Mike is an outstanding instructor and photographer. I highly recommend his workshops." - Kevin
